Sapphires come in nearly every color of the rainbow, excluding shades of red (then called Ruby). Sometimes pink rubies are called "pink sapphires", which is not quite a misnomer although corundum in shades of red is usually called ruby. However, blue is the most common, and generally the most desired. Sapphires may also have needle-like inclusions giving them a 4 or 6-rayed star. Low-grade sapphires are opaque, often cut as cabochons (as are star sapphires), and may be tumbled or cut as beads. These can still be quite lovely.
