Rubies come in several varieties. The most expensive tend to be Burmese or Blood-Red Rubies. Not all rubies are transparent; star rubies (containing needle-like inclusions that result in a 4 or 6 ray star) are generally translucent, and some poor-quality rubies are opaque and cut as cabachons. The color of a ruby is technically any shade of red, including pink and purplish-red. All other colors of corundum are called sapphire.
