The gemstone Pearl is the Birthstone for June. It is also an alternate Zodiac stone for the constellations of Scorpio and Cancer, and is the gemstone for the 30th (and recently the 12th) Anniversary. Pearls are generally a "pearly white" color but can also be found in black, depending upon the species of mollusc in which it formed. Salt-water pearls are nearly always spherical (although they can be attached to the shell), and fresh-water pearls (from a different species) often have unusual shapes. Most pearls are "cultured", in which a round object (such as a shaped piece of shell) is inserted into the flesh of the mollusc, which then covers it with a layer of "mother of pearl". A thin coating may be formed in 6 months to a year, while more durable coatings take two or more years. A natural pearl is rare, difficult to find, and consequently very valuable.
