The gemstone Opal is a Birthstone for October. It is also an alternate Zodiac stone for the constellations of Aries and Scorpio, and the gemstone for the 18th and 34th Anniversaries. Opal is hydrated silica, typically found filling cracks in bedrock. The surrounding stone is carefully cut away, revealing the opal and highlighting the play of light that gives a fine opal its appeal. Opal is also found in nodules and can be quite thick, although the play of light is often limited to small regions of the stone. The backing mineral makes the difference between a black opal and a "normal" white one; the colors appear more vivid against the black background. Note that artificial opals tend to have a great deal of color in a grainy pattern. Many opals are doublets or triplets, where a thin veneer of high-quality opal is glued to a larger backing.
